Installing vinyl lettering on a glass door is a straightforward process when done methodically. Most professionally cut vinyl lettering is supplied in three layers:

• Transfer tape (top layer): Holds all letters in their correct position.
• Vinyl lettering (middle layer): The actual adhesive graphics.
• Backing paper (bottom layer): Protects the adhesive until installation

Step 1: Clean the Glass Thoroughly

A clean surface is the most important part of the installation.

You’ll Need

• Glass cleaner (ammonia-free is ideal)
• Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
• Lint-free microfiber cloth
• Paper towels

Procedure

1. Wash the entire installation area with glass cleaner.
2. Remove fingerprints, dirt, grease, and dust.
3. Wipe the area with isopropyl alcohol.
4. Dry completely using a lint-free cloth.

Avoid

• Wax-based cleaners
• Silicone cleaners
• Dirty rags
• Installing on wet glass

Even tiny particles can create bubbles or prevent proper adhesion.

Step 2: Position the Lettering

Before removing the backing paper:

1. Hold the lettering against the glass.
2. Center it.
3. Check the height.
4. Measure equal spacing from both sides.
5. Use a level to ensure it is straight.

Once satisfied:

• Secure the graphic using masking tape.
• Create one long strip across the center (the “hinge”).

The hinge keeps everything perfectly aligned while you work.

Step 3: Remove the Backing Paper

Working from one side:

1. Fold one half away from the glass.
2. Slowly peel off the white backing paper.
3. Ensure every letter stays attached to the transfer tape.

If a letter remains on the backing:

• Lay it back down.
• Rub firmly.
• Peel again more slowly.

Never pull quickly.

Step 4: Apply the Vinyl

Beginning at the center hinge:

1. Hold the transfer tape slightly away from the glass.
2. Starting in the middle, use a plastic squeegee.
3. Work outward using overlapping strokes.

Always push:

• Center → outside
• Top → bottom

This removes trapped air as you go.

Do not simply press the entire graphic onto the glass by hand.

Step 5: Remove the Transfer Tape

Wait approximately 5–10 minutes (or longer if the glass is cold).

Peel the transfer tape:

• Slowly
• At a 180° angle (pulled back flat against itself)
• Never straight outward

If a letter lifts:

• Stop immediately.
• Lay the tape back down.
• Rub again with the squeegee.
• Continue peeling slowly.

Step 6: Inspect the Installation

Look for:

• Air bubbles
• Lifted edges
• Misaligned letters
• Dust trapped beneath the vinyl

Small bubbles often disappear naturally within a day or two.

For stubborn bubbles:

1. Use a fine pin to make a tiny hole.
2. Push the air toward the hole using the squeegee.

Avoid making large cuts with a knife.

Step 7: Final Adhesion

Go over every letter again with firm pressure using the squeegee, paying particular attention to:

• Small punctuation
• Thin strokes
• Corners
• Fine details

This helps ensure long-term adhesion.

After Installation

For best results:

• Avoid washing the glass for 24–48 hours.
• Do not scrape the lettering with razor blades.
• Clean using a soft cloth and non-abrasive glass cleaner.
• Avoid pressure washing directly at the edges.
