Size of your application surface

The first factor you need to consider is the amount of space you have to display your open hour decal. At The Retractable Banner Shop, we normally recommend a 16″ to 18″ decal, if displaying only the hours. If your company logo is added, we recommend a slightly larger 20″ to 22″ decal.

The amount of information on an open hour decal directly affects how large the decal needs to be to remain readable. A decal that’s too small forces the text to shrink, making it difficult for customers to read from a comfortable distance. Additionally, a decal that is too small will be more difficult to install, because the letters, numbers, and punctuation will not have a great deal of adhesive surface area. You may also risk the vinyl lettering falling off more easily when going to clean your door.

The goal isn’t simply to fit everything on the glass—it’s to ensure customers can read the most important information at a glance. A slightly larger decal with clear, well-spaced text will almost always create a better first impression than a smaller decal packed with information.

These two examples show the same open hours schedule. However, the example on the left has a lot more information that is relevant to the business, thereby needing a much larger decal.

The worst sign in the world is a sign that is hard to read. Make sure you purchase a sign large enough to space things out legibly without being cluttered.

What is vinyl lettering?

Here’s the quick breakdown:

  • Material: Flexible, adhesive vinyl (kind of like a fancy sticker)  - At TheRetractableBanner.Shop, we use premium Oracal 651 vinyl

  • How it’s made: A precision vinyl cutting machine cuts the letters out of a solid sheet—no ink, just the shape

How long does it take to receive my order?

Production typically takes 1–3 business days, plus shipping time depending on your location.

Can I remove or update my hours later?

Yes, the decals can be removed. If you need a few numbers to change from 5:00pm close to 5:30pm, you can order the number "3" and switch out the letters yourself. This way, you will not have to purchase a whole new decal whenever you update your information.

You can also order a single line or multiple lines of your vinyl lettering as well.

Will the decal damage my glass or surface?

No. When applied and removed correctly, the decal will not damage glass or smooth surfaces.

To remove the decals from your window, door, or vehicle, we recommend you use automotive Goo Gone Automotive.

You can also use rubbing alcohol to remove the decal as well.

Note: We have had instances where customers applied the decal onto a painted metal door or painted wooden surface and when removing the decal, some of the paint lifted off as well. Because we cannot control how the surface was prepped before painting, we cannot guarantees that this will not occur.

Can I apply the decal myself?

Yes! Each order includes application instructions. The decals are designed for easy DIY installation, even if you’ve never applied vinyl before.

Most of our customers apply these successfully themselves. We're more than happy to walk you through the process if you have any questions regarding the instructions.

Will the decals hold up outdoors?

Absolutely. Our outdoor vinyl decals for business are weatherproof and UV-resistant, designed to withstand sun, rain, and daily wear without fading or peeling.

Your decals will last even longer if you prefer to have them applied from the INSIDE face of the glass. Please note that if you have tinted doors, we recommend you apply the decal on the outside face.
